The University of the West Indies marked the inauguration of the UWI-CCRIF Scholarship Programme in a handover ceremony held at the Mona campus on 26 May, 2011. In the first year of the programme, the Caribbean Catastrophe Risk Insurance Facility (CCRIF) has provided scholarships worth US$49,000 to six students at the University who are pursuing study in areas related to disaster management.

The UWI-CCRIF Scholarship Programme is part of CCRIF’s Technical Assistance Programme which is designed to help Caribbean countries deepen their understanding of natural hazards and catastrophe risk, and the potential impacts of climate change on the region, thereby leading to increased regional climate change resilience through improved risk management.

Partnerships

Caribbean Disaster and Emergency Management Agency

Caribbean Disaster and Emergency Management Agency
CCRIF signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the Caribbean Disaster and Emergency Response Agency – now the Caribbean Disaster and Emergency Management Agency (CDEMA) – in August 2009. The MoU formalised a partnership to facilitate capacity building and to develop strategies for mitigating the physical and socio-economic impacts of natural disasters on countries in the region.  The objectives of the MOU are to promote the use of catastrophe risk modelling tools, to introduce new products and initiatives to assist Caribbean governments in better understanding and financing catastrophe risk exposures and to share real time hazard and impact information.

Caribbean Institute for Meteorology and Hydrology

Caribbean Institute for Meteorology and Hydrology
A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) is currently in place with CIMH to support the development of an extreme weather monitoring network which will record extreme rainfall and wind events and act as the verification network for CCRIF parametric policies. CIMH is actively assisting with development and operation of  the excess rainfall model, with outreach for the RTFS, and in data modeling efforts in Haiti following the January 2010 earthquake.

OECD International Network on the Financial Management of Large-Scale Catastrophes

OECD  International Network on the Financial Management of Large-Scale Catastrophes
The OECD’s ‘International Network on the Financial Management of Large-Scale Catastrophes’, has shown keen interest in CCRIF and will be using CCRIF as a coordinating agency for benchmarking disaster risk management in the Caribbean

United Nations Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean

United Nations Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (UNECLAC)
In February 2010, CCRIF and the United Nations Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (UNECLAC) signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) formalising a partnership to facilitate capacity building and to develop strategies for mitigating the physical and socio-economic impacts of natural disasters, such as hurricanes and earthquakes, on countries in the region.

UWI Disaster Risk Reduction Centre

UWI Disaster Risk Reduction Centre
The University of the West Indies (UWI) Disaster Risk Reduction Centre and the World Bank signed a grant agreement for the Caribbean Risk Atlas for floods, hurricanes and earthquakes project in mid-June 2009. CCRIF’s catastrophe modelling platform and the data it generates will be made available to assist with the execution of the Risk Atlas project.

World Forum of Catastrophe Programmes

World Forum of Catastrophe Programmes
CCRIF is a member of the World Forum of Catastrophe Programmes. The forum convenes annual meetings which bring together executives from national and international disaster insurance schemes to share their knowledge and experience and to make this available to new and emerging schemes and their sponsors.

Projects

Economics of Climate Adaptation

Economics of Climate Adaptation (ECA)
On February 26, 2010 in Barbados, CCRIF launched a study for the Caribbean region based on the Economics of Climate Adaptation (ECA) methodology to enable the development of a quantitative fact base for developing sound climate change adaptation strategies. CCRIF will be working with regional partners in the Caribbean Community Climate Change Centre (5Cs) and the UN Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (UN-ECLAC). Details about the methodology are available in 'Shaping Climate Resilient Development - a framework for decision-making,' a study by the Economics of Climate Adaptation Working Group, which includes McKinsey & Company and Swiss Re.
