CCRIF provided a grant of US$25,000 to Trinidad and Tobago NGO, the Carbon Zero Institute for Trinidad and Tobago (CZITT) to enhance its AI app for farmers, Letzfarm, making it accessible to farmers throughout Trinidad and Tobago.
Using cutting-edge AI, Letzfarm empowers small farmers to respond to climate change, boost crop yields, and secure sustainable livelihoods. The app provides personalized and actionable recommendations on climate-smart agriculture tailored to farmers’ needs. Farmers can use Letzfarm to identify diseases and pests, diagnose plant health issues, obtain weather alerts and information, track market prices and trends for their crops – all with the aim of increasing their productivity. <p style=" text-align:justify="" />The Letzfarm app can transform farming in Trinidad and Tobago – and can help farmers to adapt and thrive in the everchanging climate. It helps farmers stay informed so they can make more informed decisions and ultimately can help to create resilient farming communities.
The goal is to make the app available to farmers throughout the Caribbean. Mr. Donald Baldeosingh, CEO and Founder of CZITT, stressed the app’s importance to the Caribbean: “Our region, home to many SIDS, faces severe climate change impacts and economic threats. Digitalization is key to building resilience and sustainability.”
Letzfarm has been nominated for The Earthshot Prize 2025, which recognizes the most innovative solutions to the world’s greatest environmental challenges. Each year 15 finalists are selected and from these, 5 winners are chosen to receive the Earthshot prize. This year’s awards will be announced in November in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
CCRIF is supporting CZITT to conduct surveys of local farmers to ensure that their specific data about crops, soil types, location etc. are incorporated into the app. At the same time, the organization is hosting workshops for farmers and officials from the Ministry of Agriculture – with a special focus on extension officers – on how to use the app as well as other climate-smart agriculture tools and practices. The CCRIF grant is also being used to tailor the app for a second country – towards making it available across the region.
The global launch of the Letzfarm app was held on November 15, 2024 at the Invest Smart Caribbean Summit in Washington, DC, with a special address from the World Bank's Global Lead for Rural Livelihoods and Agricultural Jobs. The Letzfarm app was created by CZITT and Abris Inc, a technology company that offers cutting edge AI and Web3 products and services. Initial support was provided by a Shaping the Future of Innovation grant from the Government of Trinidad and Tobago, the European Union, and the Inter-American Development Bank.
