A magnitude 7.6 earthquake occurred at 02:51:31 UTC on 10 January 2018, (21:51:31 on 9 January, local time and date), 201.9 km (125.5 mi) NNE of Barra Patuca, Honduras; 303.1 km (188.3 mi) SW of George Town, Cayman Islands and 305.7 km (190.0 mi) SW of West Bay, Cayman Islands.

A low-level system with prolonged and heavy rainfall affected CCRIF member country, Trinidad and Tobago. Trinidad and Tobago has two Excess Rainfall policies – one for the island of Trinidad and the other for the island of Tobago.

This event briefing describes the impact on the island of Trinidad which was affected by heavy precipitation between 29 and 31 December. The Rainfall Index Loss calculated for this Covered Area Rainfall Event (CARE) started on 30 December and ended on 31 December 2017.

A magnitude 6.5 earthquake occurred at 02:28:24 UTC on 13 November 2017, (20:28:24 on 12 November, local time and date), 16.8 km (10.4 mi) SE of Jacó, Costa Rica; 38.5 km (23.9 mi) SW of Tejar, Costa Rica and 41.2 km (25.6 mi) SW of San Rafael Abajo, Costa Rica. Initial estimates from the United States Geological Survey (USGS) located the epicentre of the event at 9.526°N, 84.505°W, and at a depth of 19.8 km (12.3 mi). Nicaragua was the only CCRIF member country affected by the earthquake.

A tropical wave on 18 October at 0600UTC in the eastern Caribbean Sea with significant moisture in the lower and middle levels led to the development of heavy showers and thunderstorms in the Lesser Antilles.

Trinidad was affected by heavy precipitation between 18 October at 0930UTC and 20 October at 1530UTC. The Rainfall Index Loss calculated for this Covered Area Rainfall Event (CARE) that started on 18 October and ended on 20 October 2017

Its core passed over eastern Nicaragua with tropical-storm-force winds over the Atlantic coastal area. Heavy rainfall was experienced over the coastal waters of Nicaragua, as well as tropical- storm-force winds with higher gusts.

Maria, the 15th named tropical cyclone of the 2017 Atlantic Hurricane Season, formed as a tropical storm on 16 September at 2100UTC, east-southeast of the Lesser Antilles. It was upgraded to hurricane status on 17 September at 2100UTC. Maria intensified moving across the Atlantic Ocean and reached the Leeward Islands near Dominica as a major hurricane (category 5) on Monday 18 September at approximately 2345UTC.
